ReFUEL Meeting with Pastor Phil – June 15th, 2009

Last night we had our monthly volunteers meeting with everyone on our leadership team with ReFUEL.  Pastor Phil was our special guest speaker & facilitated our meeting.  I believe we were challenged in such a way that you don’t really hear a lot of Sr. Pastors do.  I appreciate our pastor taking time out of his busy schedule to come talk to our staff.  He really drew some lines down in the sand.  So with that being said, I wish we taped our meeting last night, but we didn’t.  So I’m giving you all my notes publically.  Those leaders who couldn’t make it, I’m asking you to read this & take it to heart.

Here’s the Notes:

There are Special Places on Campus:  (Our Example is the Tabernacle Plan)

1. Educational Spaces

2. Recreational Spaces (which can interchange sometimes with educational places.  Like you can teach in a gym or large room.)

3. Social Spaces (A gym isn’t a social place.  You just stand around & not much to do.  You play there or can set up a speech to learn there. But social is a cafe, coffee shop, lounge, etc…)

4. Sanctified Spaces (Spaces that are set apart)

  • The question becomes…can you unsanctify something?
  • You can selfishly take something back from God…
  • But it’s the people who decide what the building is used for.  Example is…you can’t unsanctify the Bible.  But you can unsanctiy the use of the Bible.  My actions make it set apart or not.  (CLOSE IT & ITS POWERLESS)

I John 2:15-17 – “Don’t love the world’s ways.  Don’t love the world’s goods.  Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father.  Wanting your own way.  Wanting everything for yourself.  Wanting to appear important.”

  • Selfishness
  • Greed
  • Pride

“Practically, everything that going on in the world has nothing to do with the Father.  It just isolates you from Him.”

  • Isolate is different from Insulate.  (Insulate is like a Styrofoam cup.  When you hold it, you’re not effecting the contents of the cup.  A paper cup isn’t a good insulator.)
  • But Paul used the term isolate meaning cut off.
  • Can’t feel God anymore?  What are your influences?

“The world & all it’s wanting…but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.”

The 2 M’s of Youth Ministry

  1. Model – You’re an example.  A role, speech, ethics, moral, manners model.  People do what people see.
  • Whatever you do in minimum, others will do in excess.
  • You takes your cues from people you model.
  • No matter what you do – you can only fake it for so long.  If you can take it off & put it on, then it’s not too thick.  Your character will reveal itself.
  • You can fake spirituality & worship…but you can’t fake real love, compassion, mercy, faith, etc…
  • Not what is said but what you do that becomes the most telling.”

        2.  Moré(s)– (Pronounced More-ay)  Latin term for societal norms, customs, virtues & values.

  • Society determines the norms.  (They’re different)
  • Our culture is trying to tell us what is normal.
  • There are words that change their meanings.
  • If you want to change the culture – change the language.

EXAMPLE:  Murder is now called abortion.  Kill the old is now called euthanasia or mercy killings.  Gay use to mean happy, now means alternative lifestyle.

Moré’s derive themselves from established practices rather than its written laws.

  • Meaning:  Something is done for so long that it becomes the norm.
  • Perfect example is gay marriage, or people just living together.
  • We have become desensitized.

Becareful what you say & do…words are powerful.  They’re your authority & power.

  • The question becomes…how far do you move the customs & values to be relevant?
  • Is saying a cuss word, playing a secular song, etc…is that worth the fight at the end of the day?
  • KIDS WILL DO WHAT THEY SEE & DO IT IN MAXIMUM.

This word Moré:

  • The English word “morality” comes from moré.
  • The Greek equivalent is ‘ethos’.
  • Ethos means ‘ethics’ in English.

So how do we deal with tough issues?

  • Sexuality (homosexuality)
  • Music (You can’t demonize notes – its the words)
  • Music should reflect Jesus – people ask what about beats?
  • The answer is what does it do to the morés I’m trying to live?  The beat isn’t bad…you still know the lyrics to that song though.
  • Meantality – why do you think what you think?  What you are at that moment is your mentality
  • Methods– THe message is always constant.  Make sure the methods don’t go too far from the morés.
  • “The methods determine the morés & what is acceptable.”

II Corinthians 6:17 – “Come out & be separate…touch not the unclean thing.”

  • Don’t be impressed or seduced by the world.
  • You’re struggling with being tempted by the world?  THEN STOP LOOKING AT IT!

HERE IS A GREAT QUOTE FROM OUR SR. PASTOR:

“I’d rather God accept us than us gain the approval of the world we live in.”

  • Are we trying to buy these kids or win them to Christ?
  • Are we trying to confuse them or make them like Christ?
  • Your opinions better line up with the word of God!

Teach purity, teach truth, search scripture…because we get our morés, customs, values & virtues from the HOLY Bible.

ReFUEL June 14, 2009

I believe I should start at with apologies to Spencer & Michael who were juiced last night!   But hey you got a free T-Shirt & other free stuff.  haha

ReFUEL was a blast last night!  You guys came up with some creative stories once again.  In our series ‘HOOKED’, we’re in week 3 & talked about “Getting Rid of the Hook”.  We learned what we’re supposed to do when we get hooked.  Satan is like a fisherman.  He’ll keep trying different baits to hook you.

Well, during the night in small group times you had a task.  Write a funny story of someone getting hooked on something.  It couldn’t be the normal drugs or alcohol.  So once again, here are your stories ReFUEL:

GROUP #1:  TAPOUT

ADDICTION:  Making Goats Faint

“Back in Africa, in a country called Mozambique, I made a goat faint.  Then I laughed, it filled me with such joy that I continued to do it.  It was awesome, the goats all of a sudden made better milk.  The goat said, “Milk me!”  But then the goat started to fly & became SUPER GOAT!  Eventually, the goat started to fly away.  And you couldn’t catch him anymore.  It flew too far & ended up in heaven.  Making goats faint brings them closer to God.”

GROUP #2: CHOCOLATE ROBO-COPS

ADDICTION: Sniffing People’s Socks

“So there’s this guy…& from he outside he looks like your normal squirrel, but do not be deceived.  He really is a 1 eyed, 1 horned, flying purple people eater.  With his humongous nose he loves to sniff socks.  He lives in the locker room & takes people’s socks.  From babies to old men, he smell them all.  And…it’s awkward.”

GROUP #3: CHIMICHANGAS

ADDICTION: Josh hooked on hot dogs & Scorpions

“One day an orphan named Josh O’Bannion owned a hot dog shack full of snakes & scorpions.  He was poisoned & the only thing he could eat was a hot dog.  He lived in the mountains like a caveman.  His best friend Keith Suggs was in town being held for ransom & the payment was 4 hot dogs, a box of scorpions & a chili cheese fry.  Josh lost 350lbs. & decided not to be hooked on hot dogs & scorpions.  5 days later he was called to be on the Pastor Phil show in regards to his addiction.”

GROUP #4: THE ALPACAS

ADDICTION: Jacob Preciado Hooked on Nail Polish

“Jacob Preciado got hooked on nail polish.  His favorite colors were hot pink & rainbow.  His favorite brand was PRO.  He is allergic to acitone & peanut butter.  One day it was sunny & Jacob brought in Phillip’s tighty whities to refuel.  He was wearing purple nail police & was showing it off to everyone at refuel prom.  Then he wore phillip’s, ate soup & became a ninja with tighty whities.  THE END.”

Well, there are your stories.  Don’t forget to get your refuel wrist bands!  Coming soon…T SHIRTS & MUGS!

Running Away with the Gates

BS0012-013-01

Well everyone from ReFUEL, I just wanted to say hey & hope you’re all having a great day!  Just wanted to let you know our new podcast will be up later in the day.  We had a special guest with us this week.  It was Eugene Scott, so be sure to check it out!

A thought occurred to me of just exactly how much destiny is over the head of my generation!

Think about this just for a second…

God gave a prophecy to Abraham, & we are part of that same family…

Genesis 22:17 – “That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;”

Samson fulfilled this prophecy when he carried away the gates of the city where the Philistines were.  The gates of the city was where politics were debated, Proverbs said that a virtuous woman would make her husbands name known in the gates of the city.  The gates were the protection of the city.

So if you possessed the gates of a city, you pretty much possessed that city!  You could have access to that city & take it over…

I have never walked down the street & had a gate jump up & smack me in the face!  The only reason you have a gate is to keep things out & protect the things that you possess…

There is the same prophecy that was spoken again in the New Testament to be fulfilled…

Matthew 16:18 – “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

MEANING:  There is a strong message of destiny echoing through time directly to me!  HELL CAN’T KEEP ME OUT!  And HELL CAN’T PROTECT WHAT IS POSSESSES!

I make a strong statement when I say this, “I REFUSE TO ALLOW ANYONE TO USE THE EXCUSE THAT THEY ARE A LOST CAUSE!”  – Don’t make me pray about something…IN JESUS NAME, I’m coming for you!

I’m going to take the gates of my city, TEMPE IS MINE!!!!

So I challenge you to be God’s answer to hell’s challenge…Start taking the gates down…

A Life of Happiness or a Life of Meaning?

There are 2 different paths in life…

You can either have a life of happiness or a life of meaning….BUT YOU CAN’T HAVE BOTH…

They lead separate pathways in life:

Life of happiness – live in the present, no thought of before or what lies ahead

Life of meaning – condemned to wallow in the past & obsess about the future

It’s a decision everyone has to make. One might argue that a life of meaning is truly happiness. But a life of meaning is truly a lonely road. So in the true meaning of happiness is lonely happy? Myself, much like many other this day are at a crossroads…which life will I choose?

I keep thinking about Christ’s walk for a life of meaning…was his life a life we really are wanting to take?  We may think living a life just like Jesus Christ is happy…but is it?

I sometimes feel convicted by the over romanitcizing of all the happy clappy things about Jesus.  Because I often neglect the moments of intense sacrifice, incredible loneliness & many hardships & temptations to overcome.

A Follower of Jesus Christ,

Josh

Stories from ReFUEL May 31, 2009

Good morning everyone!  Hope everyone had a great weekend.  Mine was such a long weekend, especially yesterday…but well worth it!

I wanted to do a quick post this morning for all of my kids in ReFUEL.  I wanted to post your creative stories up on the blog for all to read.  You guys rock!

They had to finish a short story & it goes like this:

Once upon a time there were 5 kids from ReFUEL who loves to break into people’s houses from the church & steal all of their light bulbs.  One day they broke into Pastor Phil’s house & little did they know…”

Then they had to finish the story…

GROUP #1: The 10 Little Eskomoes

“…Pastor Phil has a shot gun which was God.  When they went to take the bulbs, they were gone because he didn’t like light.  So they went to the closet for shoes & found the guard dog which ended up eating them all.”

GROUP #2: KGC Eastas

“…That he was amish & uses candles.  He was eating Kentucky grilled chicken with deviled eggs & drinking rootbeer with Pastor Brendon.  They snuck into Phillips room & took his pink whitety tightys & his pokeman emerald.”

GROUP #3: Hungrians

“…That Pastor Phil had a gun.  A red pistol.  Also that Pasor Phil was secretly batman that had a dog named Jesus.  Pastor Phil says Jesus is watching you.  That’s when the kids noticed Pastor Phil had no light bulbs…he uses fire.  Wait Phillip Jr. is in the bathroom going #2.  The End.”

GROUP #4: Guitar 17

“…An elephant, a snake, godzilla, a bird, a cell phone & a dodge charger were playing in his pool eating snacks & wearing Phillip Jr.’s pjs.”

Great stories guys…sorry Phillip Jr. ended up getting roasted in 3 out of the 4 stories.  🙂

ReFUEL was great last night….can’t wait for laser tag this Friday & ReFUEL on Sunday!

ReFUEL Poems from May 24th

Jesus Thumbs Up

So I hope everyone had a great memorial day. Mine was rather eventful from fixing my car which broke down over the weekend, moving into my new house & then off to a pool party. From which, I am very sore from!

Well, ReFUEL was amazing on Sunday. We had a blast with BBQing on the grill…we had 39 students. We missed some of our regulars that weren’t there!

During the service we did this group time, each group had a certain name but then had to write a short poem about how cool God is…

GROUP #1: The Detonators

“Our God is an awesome God!
He reigns from heaven above with wisdom & power.
God is so beautiful to me
He is the M&M of the Christian world.
One way Jesus, Your the onle One I could live for.
I’m desperate for You.”

GROUP #2: The Chocolate Rabbits

“God You are so cool
We come to worship You at ReFUEL.
It’s like eating ice cream in the pool,
Anyone who disagrees is a fool.”

GROUP #3: The Veterans

“God is really cool,
He won’t play you like a fool.
God is really great,
He does not have hate.
God is like a gravy biscuit,
Just like a tasty trisket.”

GROUP #4: The Gangsta Church

“God is smart, He saves your heart.
He helps us get through stuff, He’s more than enough.
He’s cool like Kayne West, you can just forget the rest.
I really love the big J.C.
Because He wants to save you & me.”

Just wanted to tell all you guys at ReFUEL, you guys rock!  Keep up being CREATIVE FOR CHRIST!

New ReFUEL Promo Video

Hey guys, Matt Walker just handed me our new ReFUEL promo video for this weekend.  You’ll see more of these videos.

Yesterday Keith Suggs & I did a lot of recording.  We did 2 videos and our very first podcast for Refuel.  Be sure to check it all out.

Let me know what you think!

A love story…Boaz finds his Ruth

lol_title01

Lately I keep thinking more about relationships.  Especially intimate relationships…and I know I’m the only one thinking about it.  I just had someone tell me that they’re praying I find a woman soon!  Pretty funny…but it’s kept me thinking…

From the story of Ruth shows an incredible story about relationship.

Boaz was an accomplished man

  • A true woman of quality will not be found unless you are a man of accomplishment & significance.

Ruth was no ordinary woman

  • She was devout, hard working, took initiative, leadership & servant minded, not to mention probably beautiful on the outside as well!

Boaz had his house set in order.

  • I don’t believe a man of God can have a quality relationship unless he has his house, life & ministry set in order.  He was established in his work…

But then Ruth was serving one day…she had no intention of finding a man!  Boaz wasn’t in a desperate search of a woman either!  But DESTINY UNFOLDED!  WOW!

Boaz then stepped up as a man & took notice.  He knew about Ruth because of what he heard, but never saw her until now.  He knew this was a woman of quality & she was right in his field.  He felt honored by it, but what struck him was he saw from a distance, some woman following & working hard.

Here’s the provoking key thought:  She was laboring in his labor!

  • Think about it…Boaz worked hard to build this field, Ruth was working hard in reaping from it & helping harvest it….THEIR MINISTRIES WERE WORKING TOGETHER!

Boaz saw this from far away, then when he got closer & saw her beauty…UH OH!  He was caught up, hook, line & sinker!  So he took care of her…he didn’t want her to go to another field.  (A.K.A. meet another man)  Boaz wasn’t no slouch…he didn’t want to be a mooch & make her pay for the meal or treat him to dinner!  (Stay away from the losers ladies!)

So Ruth is interested in Boaz as well.  And she asks her mother-in-law for some advice.  She could’ve easily brushed off her advice as some old woman who didn’t know what she was talking about. Young ladies…your mom or grandmother has some wisdom!  LISTEN TO THEM!  Ruth’s mother-in-law told her to lay at his feet & care for him…

Some women get offended when you tell them that they should lay at the feet of their husbands & be submissive.  But that has been taken so out of context in our generation today.  Ruth trusted this man Boaz.  He 1st took care of her, provided for her…& this wasn’t just a paycheck!  This wasn’t about just giving her a house & food…that’s what some people think is a good relationship.  But Boaz communicated with her, he took time to spend with her, give her what she needed most in life, gave her protection & respect.  Boaz was a powerful man that could’ve took her, but he wanted to win her!!!!!!!

When Ruth saw this (And I know she respected her mother-in-law’s instruction) , but I think it’s so deeper than that.  I think she wouldn’t lay down & submit (being willing to be under his house, not treated as a slave), she wouldn’t give herself to this man until she saw what kind of man he was.  He proved himself to her & she knew this was a man of God that respected her enough to make sure she wasn’t harmed or went without!

Definition of Submission by the dictionary: “1. to give over or yield to the power or authority of another.  2. to subject to some kind of treatment or influence.”

  1. (Boaz didn’t notice her beauty until he finally met her upclose & personal)

Men, make sure you find a woman who won’t just use you either.  But if you want a woman that is of quality & value…get your stuff together & in order.  And learn how to keep your eyes open & off yourself.  Be generous & giving, compassionate & loving, selfless & thoughtful!  And when you find that woman…RESCUE HER, PROTECT HER, PROVIDE FOR HER, SPEND TIME WITH HER, COMMUNICATE WITH HER, PROVE YOURSELF TO HER…

I SHALL FIND MY RUTH ONE DAY!

 A hopeless romantic,

Josh
